Richard Griffiths, OBE, has become the first patron of Deaffest

Deaffest is very honoured to announce that Richard Griffiths, OBE, has become the first patron for the international film festival.

Richard Griffiths is an accomplished British actor of stage, film and television. Some of his best known roles include that of Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films and his portrayal of Uncle Monty in the cult classic film Withnail and I. He is also well known for his roles in theatre productions such as Alan Bennett’s The History Boys, for which he received a number of awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor. This year he will be starring alongside Danny DeVito in a new production of the Neil Simon play The Sunshine Boys.

Richard Griffiths grew up with Deaf parents, thus he has a strong insight and understanding of Deaf culture.

Def Motion confirmed for Deaffest 2012!

We’ve been busy working on the program for Deaffest 2012 and can confirm that DefMotion will be performing again this year. Def Motion is a vibrant young Deaf dance group based in Wolverhampton. They had a fantastic response from the audience last year, with the entire audience standing up to dance along! So we’re thrilled to have them performing at Deaffest again!

Philip Bloom to be a Ben Steiner Bursary judge!

We have some exciting news! Philip Bloom will be sitting on the judging panel for the Ben Steiner Film Bursary this year!

Philip Bloom is a film-maker who has worked as a cinematographer for LucasFilm, Sky and BBC. He will bring invaluable knowledge and experience with him to the judging panel as they make the decision about who will win the Ben Steiner Bursary!

Philip Bloom is a highly regarded filmmaker and teacher. He travels the world making films, like Lucasfilm’s Red Tails and the Raindance award winning documentary How to start a revolution. When he is not making films he is teaching low budget filmmaking students all over the globe.

He learnt his craft during 17 years covering news, since then he has worked for pretty much every major broadcaster out there. He also runs a hugely successful website PhilipBloom.net that gets well over a million views a month.
