The Cornwall Mini Deaffest 2023 quiz night took place on Saturday 10th June with a great turnout!
Hosted by Co-Founder of Deaffest Marilyn Willrich, Jackie Woodburn and Manda Woodburn, the Quiz Night took place at Vara Hotel in Truro to fundraise for Cornwall Mini Deaffest 2023.
The atmosphere was buzzing where about 30 participants put on their thinking caps ready for the questions from Quiz Masters Jackie and Manda. The quiz covered general knowledge, guessing the face of celebrities and Deaf related subjects. One of the highlights that night was the fingerspelling pictures! In the interval there was plenty of socialising and a thrilling tombola draw!
Congratulations to the Duo Team/ Paul Pycroft and Debbie Thomas for achieving first place and for so generously donating the money towards Cornwall Mini Deaffest. Round of applause/ handwaves also go to those who won second and third places.
A wonderful night and many thanks to the Quiz Masters and the participants for getting involved to help raise money for the Cornwall Mini Deaffest!
Deaffest on Tour will showcase the ten films listed here, at Norfolk Deaf Festival, The Auditorium, The Forum Millennium Plain, Norwich, Norfolk, NR2 1TF on Saturday 8th July 2023, at 2.30pm.
These films have all been produced by deaf directors and/or include deaf actors/ performing artists. All films are subtitled.

Alexis Ffrench – One Look (Reprise) | Dir. Ted Evans | UK | 2023
A classical soul pioneer and pianist Alexis Ffrench has teamed up with director and film-maker Ted Evans, best known for his BIFA nominated short ‘To Know Him’, to create a beautifully moving and thought-provoking new video for Ffrench’s magical ‘One Look Reprise’ composition. Profoundly deaf in one ear and severely deaf in the other, Ted Evans’ visual take on this beautiful and emotive track, featuring creative sign merged with dance in the video, aims to further open up classical music to the deaf community, while highlighting that “sign languages unite us”.

Oscar and his deaf younger sister Nia are sent down to a remote coastal town to visit their estranged fisherman father Mark. Over the space of an afternoon the trio are ripped apart and brought back together again in this film surrounding deafness in a family dynamic.
Camera | Dir. Dhinesh R.P | India | 2022
Photographers need cameras. Daniel Jebaraj is a photographer. To help him with his photography business, his parents give him a camera as a birthday gift. Unfortunately, he doesn’t see the warning that comes with it. In his work as a travelling photographer, he takes photographs of three men who look directly into the lens of the camera and fall down dead. He didn’t know it was dangerous and so could not warn them about the hazard of turning your face and eyes to this camera. The dead men come back to find Daniel. Be careful not to let this camera see your face and eyes, or you could die!
Do You Understand? | Dir. Jack Smallwood | UK | 2022
This film, produced by Jack Smallwood, will portray the emotions expressed by D/deaf people via a short BSL poem created specifically for this project. The poem tackles the concept of dual identity, with D/deafness, in relation to selfhood. This short film features people who are deaf/hard of hearing and are born, raised and live in Wolverhampton.
Le Chemin | Dir. Gilles Cervantes | France | 2023
In the 1950s, a deaf young man sleeps rough. He lives with his 2 dogs with whom he communicates in sign language. A young seamstress, also deaf, accompanied by her boss, will cross paths with this young man. The seamstress is touched by the goodness of this tramp and ends up becoming his friend, which is not at all to the taste of the boss. Judged and belittled by him, the seamstress resigns from her job and decides to start a new life with the tramp. She begins by sewing him new clean clothes and then she welcomes him to her home.

The premise is not new – deaf people often face barriers in society, but we’ve taken that and turned it into this rap video featuring Sean Forbes, Warren ‘Wawa’ Snipe and Bajan Deaf Children.

A hearing man reunites with his deaf cousin at a family funeral. Long-simmering tensions and resentments come to the surface.
Rite of Identity | Dir. Youmee Lee | USA | 2022
Rite of Identity is a 2D animated film about a deaf child, Hana, who has exceptional artistic talent but struggles with an overwhelming soundscape. Hana represents a collection of deaf people’s childhood stories. The film is shaped by the American Sign Language (ASL) poetry format and is loaded with deaf symbols and motifs.
Solir the Alien | Dir. Paul Miller | UK | 2022
In space, not too far away, there is a moon. Living on this moon is an alien called Solir. Solir spends a lot of time watching over planet Earth, and is always on the hunt for rare and unique items. One day, the little alien spots a young boy and girl who seems to communicate differently to the other children. Solir is not able to communicate, so it decides to steal what is important to the young boy and girl – all just to get what it needs. Will Solir get away with it?
