Deaf Poet Richard Carter will be performing at Deaffest 2019 on Saturday 18th May.

Richard is one of the UK’s foremost Deaf BSL poets with many original sign language poems, stories and performances to his name.

He teaches poetry to Deaf and hearing adults and children across the UK. He has performed his own poetry at a range of events including the Bristol Sign Poetry Festival and has mentored children who participated in the Life & Deaf project in 2006 and 2011.

He is currently a research consultant on an Arts and Humanities Research Council project that explores the use of metaphor within creative sign language.

Mobile Creche, qualified, experienced and enhanced DBS cleared staff, will be overseeing both age groups in the Kids’ workshops.

10.00am – 12.45pm Handprint Theatre Children’s Workshop

Grand Theatre Spotlight Lounge

Handprint Theatre have been working with the popular children’s book Moonbird by Joyce Dunbar and Jane Ray. We will be leading a family friendly theatre and storytelling workshop to explore and create your own adventure. Will the Moonbird take you to the stars, under the sea, through a forest, we look forward to seeing where your imagination takes you! Deaf and hearing siblings welcome. Mobile creche will support the session with additional fun activities.
Fee per child £5 full day. Limited places.

12.45pm – 2.00pm Lunchtime children MUST be collected by their parents / guardians.

2.00pm – 4.00pm Storytelling and Mobile Creche

Grand Theatre Spotlight Lounge

Fitting in with the festival theme ‘Share Your Story’, Deaffest kids can enjoy Dachy’s Deaf, a story session in BSL, led by well-known CBeebies presenter of ‘Magic Hands’, Donna Mullings. Dachy the dinosaur wears a hearing aid. But sometimes, when his friends get too noisy, he likes to turn it off to get some peace and quiet. One day, when his hearing aid is off, Dachy falls asleep and without realising, ends up in great danger. Can his friends rescue him in time?
Mobile Creche will support the session with additional fun activities.

10.00am – 12.45pm Vamos Mask Performance Children’s Workshop

Vamos Theatre is the UK’s leading full mask theatre company. In this relaxed and fun session, you can learn the skills of mask performance, develop your own on-stage character, and perfect the visual way of telling a story without words.
Fee per child: £5 full day. Limited places.

12.45pm – 2.00pm Lunchtime children MUST be collected by their parents / guardians.

2.00pm – 4.00pm Comedy & Finger Dance Children’s Workshop

Deaffest kids will get two experts for the price of one in this fun-filled workshop! Deaf UK comedian and actor John Smith, who tours his hugely successful shows throughout the UK, Europe and internationally, has teamed up with young deaf Russian-born dance performer Andrey Dragunov to bring kids a hilarious mixture of comedy, dance and finger dance skills. Fee per child: £5 full day. Limited places.


*Both groups MUST be collected by their parents/guardians at lunch time 12.45pm – 2.00pm. Please pick up at the end of workshop at 4.00pm.
