MC for Deaffest 2014: Philippa Merricks
Philippa has been involved with several areas of work during her lifetime, ranging from local to international projects. She is currently working at Deafway, a Deaf charity based in Preston, Lancashire as an Animateur.
She is involved in several projects at Deafway, for example the Deaf – International Citizen Service project that was partnered with VSO to organise a three month volunteer placement in the Philippines in 2013 and 2014.
She is also involved in the organising of a committee for the biggest Deaf camping festival in the UK called Sign Circle, which will be held in the summer of 2014.
Outside of her work, Philippa volunteers for different groups such as, British Deaf Association; British Deaf History Society; Deaf and BSL Society at University of Lancashire; NDCS and Frontrunners.
She was a committee member and on the board of Trustees for the European Union of the Deaf Youth and was also President for four years.
Philippa was involved as Mistress of Ceremonies for the Deaf Sports Personality of the Year 2012 and will be MC again for DSPY2014.
Since “catching’ the travel bug following her first trip overseas to Portugal at the 13 years for the World Federation of the Deaf Youth’s junior camp she has never stayed still!
She has also been involved in several international events and even translated the FIFA World Cup 2010 summary report into International Sign which was broadcast to millions of viewers worldwide!
